Gradient Shawl – Knitting Pattern
Materials:
- Yarn: Ice Yarns Cakes Alpaca Fine (approximately 800 meters) or any soft fine yarn. This type of yarn with color transitions works beautifully for this shawl.
- Needles: 4 mm or 4.5 mm knitting needles, preferably long circular needles or straight needles.
- Scissors and Tapestry Needle (for weaving in the ends).
Getting Started:
Step 1: Cast On
- Begin by casting on 3 stitches. You can use the long-tail cast-on method, which is a good, stretchy method for knitting.
- If you’re unfamiliar with casting on, you can look up tutorials on YouTube by searching for “knitting cast-on.”
Step 2: Setup Row (Garter Stitch)
- Knit all the stitches for the first row. This means you will knit every stitch in the row (this is called garter stitch).
- Note: Garter stitch means knitting every row, and it will create a stretchy, squishy fabric.
Main Knitting Pattern:
Now, we begin the main pattern, which involves increasing stitches on every right side (RS) row and just knitting all stitches on every wrong side (WS) row.
Step 3: Right Side (Increase Row)
- On the right side (RS) of the shawl, begin by knitting the first stitch.
- Yarn Over (YO): To increase, wrap the yarn around the needle from front to back (this is called a Yarn Over). This creates an additional loop that will add a new stitch.
- Knit all the remaining stitches in the row.Example:
- Knit the first stitch.
- Yarn Over (wrap the yarn around the needle).
- Knit all the remaining stitches in the row.
Step 4: Wrong Side (WS)
- On the wrong side (WS), knit all stitches, including the Yarn Over (YO) stitches from the previous row.
- This means that even though you added a new stitch by Yarn Over, you’ll treat it as a normal stitch and knit it.
Repeating the Pattern:
Step 5: Repeat the Two Rows
- Continue repeating the two rows:
- On the right side (RS): Knit 1 stitch, then Yarn Over (wrap the yarn around the needle), and knit all the remaining stitches.
- On the wrong side (WS): Simply knit all the stitches.
By doing this, on each right side row, you are increasing the stitch count by 1, and your shawl will grow into a triangular shape.
Dealing with Yarn Color Changes:
Step 6: Yarn Transitions
- If you’re using yarn with color transitions (like gradient yarn), continue knitting without disturbing the natural color flow of the yarn.
- When the color changes, you can either:
- Knot the yarn and join a new color.
- Alternatively, transition between colors smoothly by overlapping the colors a bit.
Finishing the Shawl:
Step 7: When to Stop Increasing
- Once the shawl reaches the desired size (usually around 150-180 cm wide), you can stop increasing.
- You should now have a nice, wide triangular shawl.
Step 8: Bind Off
- To finish, bind off all the stitches loosely. You can do this by knitting the first two stitches, then passing the first stitch over the second one, and continuing this process until all stitches are bound off.
Final Touches:
Step 9: Blocking
- Once the shawl is bound off, you can gently block it to shape it. To do this:
- Lightly steam the shawl using a steam iron, or
- Wet the shawl and pin it out to the desired shape. You can use pins to stretch and shape the shawl while it dries.
This will give the shawl a nice, smooth finish and make the stitches even more defined.
